What has been planted

It struck me the other day that I hadn't really given details of the varieties I am growing - and who knows, someone might be interested and wonder what type of bean etc. - so here is what I have so far:

Broad Beans
Mostly Bunyards Exhibition and some Sutton (I think) left over from last year

Runner Beans
Galaxy (I have tried some others left over from previous years but so far without success)

French Beans
Purple Queen planted (but not yet up) and I have other old ones I might plant.

Broccoli
Autumn Calabrese

Cabbage
Hispi F1

Sprouts
Wellington F1

Lettuce
A mixture of Little Gem (cos), Webbs Wonderful (iceberg), All year round (butterhead) and Lollo Rossa (red looseleaf)

Tomato
Sweet Olive F1 and Cherry Sweet Million

Peppers
Salad Festival & Canape F1 - sweet peppers
Heat Wave - chilli peppers

More on this topic as I plant stuff - I'll try and remember to say what the variety is when I plant…..

Broad Beans All Planted

The weather has been reasonably warm and dry for the last few days so some progress has been made in the garden.

Broad Beans

Now all the broad beans from the greenhouse are planted - this has led to the creation of triple rows to fit them in (see below). They are now almost big enough to require support - so that is the next task. I forgot to mention the varieties earlier - they are a mixture of 'The Sutton' (from previous year) and 'Bunyards Exhibition'

To see where these are in the overall scheme see Garden Plan

Other Beans

Meanwhile, in the greenhouse, the runner beans planted a couple of weeks ago are almost big enough to go out (see below).

Runner Beans - in greenhouse

Some more have been planted (variety 'Galaxy' ;) along with some French beans (variety - a purple one - Purple Queen).

Lettuce

The lettuce plants (from a 'mixure' packet) grown in the greenhouse are now big enough to plant out - and some have been planted close to the greenhouse.

Tomatoes

Some of these have now been planted into a 'grow bag' in the greenhouse (see below). They are two varieties - a 'cherry' type and an 'olive' type. Some others will go into grow bags outdoors, along with pepper plants when they are big enough.

Digging

The remaining areas of the garden that needed digging and weeding is now almost completed. It won't be ready for crops to be planted into it for a couple of weeks, then it will probably be used for some salad crops (such as rocket, lettuce, carrots etc.)

Flowers

The flower seeds are now up (see earlier article) but will need a week or so before they can be thinned out. The rest of the garden has tulips in full bloom now and the daffodils are about over, but there are some narcissi still flowering. And of course - the grass is growing like mad - it's already been cut once and looks like it need another.

Beans and More….

Today just had a few minutes to put in a few broad bean plants grown in the greenhouse into a couple of spots where beans hadn't come through in the rows planted direct. Also, a few leftovers were used to create a the start of a third 'row' to one of the double rows (there are more to be added coming up in the greenhouse).
Not much opportunity to do more in the garden today - raining most of the day on and off, but mild - 'good growing weather' as my grandma would have said.

Meanwhile, in the greenhouse I split up some sprout and lettuce seedlings from the original seed trays and replanted spaced out into trays. Also some of the tomato seedlings which were several to a pot have been split up into individual pots to grow on to a size ready to plant into growing bags.

My flower seeds - nicotiana and other have started to come through now but will be a week or so before anything needs to be  ewith them.

And that is all there is to say today…. but I might add photos if I get a chance to take any in the next couple of days.

The Beans & Other Progress 1

Had a chance to garden yesterday so things have moved on. The cloches are off the broad beans planted in Feb and most seem to be coming through.
The broad beans planted in the greenhouse have been planted out and look fine, though well ahead of the ones planted direct, but they’ll catch up now the weather is better.

The picture below shows the view - the greenhouse ones in front and vague green blobs the ones planted direct behind.
Beans plot - April_1

For anyone not here in the UK midlands, we had a pretty cold March and early April (the last frost only a week ago) so the ground is still vey cold which will have held back the beans planted direct into the ground.

They may be more obvious in the picture above….

Apart from the beans, some lettuce seedling planted in a tray have been ‘pricked out’ into a couple of trays in the greenhouse to give room for them to grow before planting out. Also, some tomatoes and peppers which were germinated on window ledges in the house are now appearing and some are in the greenhouse - in a few days they will be big enough to put into individual pots (they are several seedlings to pot at the moment).

Meanwhile, broccoli and cabbage seedlings already pricked out are coming on in the greenhouse - though the cabbages are struggling a bit. Some brussels sprout seedlings are just through in a tray and will want to be pricked out soon.

The picture below shows the cabbages, broccoli and sprout seedlings (broad beans on the right)

Seedlings in Greenhouse

Flowers haven’t been forgotten and a couple of trays of seeds have been sown, more on those as they appear.

Oh and 25 gladioli were planted out as well.

Once I get to grips with photos in the blog properly there will be some more to illustrate progress hpefully somwhat clearer than those above.

The Status Now…

Ok I need to outline what is happening so far - eventually I'll produce a diagram once I've sorted out how display it correctly.

One side of the garden (pictured in the Intro post) is given over to mostly beans this year.

There are 2 rows of Broad Beans planted in Feb and just coming up.
One row of broad beans started in the greenhouse (see below - 'hardening off' just before planting).

Broad Beans

The white bits in the picture below (Intro) are cloches over the planted Broad Beans.

This side of the Broad Beans will be Runner Beans - a trench has been filled with some of my compost ready for these.

The beans have been planted in pots in the greenhouse just the other day.

Nearer will be French Beans - to be planted in the greenhouse first.

Any space left over will be filled with lettuce (already growing in the greenhouse).

Our Garden

This may be (if I remember and have time) an account of our garden through this year with pictures etc.

Not that I'm an expert - it is just a fairly standard suburban garden in the UK Midlands and how it develops through this year.

This is a fairly boring view of part of the garden - more later…
