Some Salad Seed Sown

Well the alliterative title indicates that there has been some planting action - yes I have managed to sow short rows of rocket, carrots and radishes so should have some salad to crop in a few weeks. Also, the lettuce seedling in the greenhouse are coming on so it won’t be long before they will need to be planted out (see photo below).

Also, there are now about five cherry tomato seedlings, but still no sign of olive type. A couple of peppers have struggled through but they  aren’t looking good at the moment.

I will need to plant a tray of broad beans withing the next couple of days, they are already outside the greenhouse and more are coming through in the greenhouse (see photo). The ones already planted are doing well (see photo).

Broad beans - coming on

The weather broke on Monday and we have had a couple of days of light rain which will have helped the garden a lot (and unfortunately encouraged the grass to grow). Today we are back to sunshine (20degC!) and the outlook is fine for the next few days at least for this side of the country.

Potatoes go in

Finally I managed to find time to get the potatoes planted - so now there are three and a half rows of spuds (thanks again Guy for the gift).
The varieties were:

1 Kestrel - (second early) - a bit late I know but better late than never nearly 2 rows
2 Desiree - (maincrop) - a row and a bit
3 King Edward - (maincrop) - about 3/4 of a row

So now we’ll have to wait and see how they do. I did try potatoes once before in plot C and I wasn’t very impressed - but I didn’t look after them very well I don’t think, so maybe these will be better.

I leaves a bit of space still between the onions and potatoes so now I’ll have to think what to put in there.

In the greenhouse four or five of the cherry tomatos have come through, but curiously, none of the olive variety, at least yet.

Also, rather worrying, is the fact that none of the peppers are through yet.

On the brighter side, another set of broad beans are just about ready to be hardened off (Bunyards Exhibition). Another set, this time of a variety I bought recently - ‘Jubilee Hysor’ - are just coming through. There should be enough for three rows altogether with the ones already in.

While I’m mentinong varieties - the onions I planted are: ‘Centurion’ and ‘Jet Set’

I would note that we still haven’t had any rain, so watering of the onions and broad beans each day is necessary - and of course of the seedlings etc. in the greenhouse.

What to grow - decision made for me

Well things have moved on since the last post - first of all the digging is complete though not the final preparation, there is still some compost to add and raking over to do on plot A.

As for what to grow, those decisions were helped by a donation from the my niece’s husband (thanks Guy) of some onions sets and potatoesleft over from planting in his garden. So I have already planted three rows of onions in plot B (that’s all of them - 2 varieties), and hope to get round to the potatoes sometime this week (also to go into plot B). I’ll add in the name of the varieties when I remember to take some paper into the greenhouse! I might note that I had raked the plot and added some ‘growmore’  few days before planting - though I wouldn’t describe the soil as a ‘fine tilth’ that the books describe - I’m not sure I ever get that in my garden.

The weather has been so dry and hot that the recently planted broad beans needed serious watering over the weekend - we haven’t had any real rain for a couple of weeks at least now.

Meanwhile, in the greenhouse, more broad beans are coming through, the lettuce seedlings are growing fast and a couple of tomatos are through now. No sign of the peppers or french beans yet however.

The weather is still fine and sunny, which means the grass and the hedges are growing - so those jobs are on the horizon again. We have had quite a few butterflies in the garden and ‘our’ blackbirds may well have chicks as I’ve seen both of them searching madly for food in the garden at the same time. Spring has more than sprung - it feels like summer already, though colder weather is predicted I gather.

Planting Has Started

The first row of broad beans was planted yesterday - plus part of another row (Bunyards Exhibition), and the weather is still good - sunny today and 20C. Mind, none of the other beans planted in pots in the greenhouse have appeared yet, although some new ones have been added (bought a few days ago - can’t remember the variety just now).

a partial row runs under the cloche in the middle

However, the lettuce have started to come through in the tray so that’s quite encouraging. All I have to do now is to decide what else to plant this year and where (apart from the peas and beans).

Other developments - the last area to be cleared and dug over has almost been completed (plot A) so that also puts pressure on decisions of what to grow….

Plat A - almost finished

Good Friday - and the weather too!

Well, contrary to the normal reputation of holiday weekends this one looks like being fine and sunny. It certainly was today - a bit of cloud but essesntially sunny all day and temperatures of 15C outside.

We’ve had good weather for a few days now, so progress in the garden has been quite noticeable. Plot B (see garden map) is now completely dug over and has had the contents of 5 growbags from last year added to it - I’ve not yet decided what is going in there though…

 Plot B - dug

Plot B - dug over

I’ve also limed plot C which still has the cloches over the potential broad bean rows so hopefully that will help the peas and beans.

Digging of plot A has been started so about a third has been dug over. That bit has had a barrowful of compost added to it as well.

Meanwhile, in the greenhouse, planting has been going on apace. I’ve planted up a trayful of lettuce seeds, some peppers (both sweet and chilli types), tomatoes (olive and sweet cherry types) and some french beans (a purple podded type). Also, the sunny weather has prompted me to replace the operating tubes into the window auto-openers (I’d taken them out as they aren’t supposed to get frosted - mind this winter it would hardly have been a problem). So this afternoon after I’d fitted them both windows were open so that shows how hot it has been.

The broad beans that have already come up in the greenhouse will be ready to plant out within a week so they will need to go outside to harden off sometime this weekend

On another note - just to show how springlike it has been I’ve seen ‘Emperor’ and ‘Comma’ butterflies in the garden today and our cowslips in the ‘wild’ part of the garden are coming out. The damson bushes/trees that we have at the bottom of the garden are also well in flower.

An April Fool Digging

Well I could have been inside relaxing in the comfort of the house - but the weather was so good on Sunday (1st April) that, despite having tired legs from a 3hr plus training run on Saturday, I just could not resist working in the garden.

So I managed to finish digging the beans plot (only a little bit left actually), rake it over, dig a trench for compost (for runner beans) cover it over and put cloches out for the broad bean rows!

Also, now the first lot of broad beans are mostly well up in the greenhouse I planted another set of pots up as well.

The pots without shoots are new plantings

Then I managed to mow the lawn as well - all in the afternoon - well it was pretty sunny day so it would have been a pity to miss out - especially since I’m so far behind this year.  I even had the energy to play a bit of ’swing-ball’ with my son before mowing the lawn.

It was a bit depressing walking round the garden spotting all the jobs that need doing but if it stays fine over the next week or so then maybe some of them will get done…
