I've also been invested with white cabbage caterpillar and this is only my first year at growing veg. Apart from hand-picking and squishing which I've spent the morning doing, I'm trying the garlic remedy that I saw on-line today. I've literally rubbed the cabbage leaves with cut garlic cloves and have 'planted' some between the rows of the cabages and their other seeming favourite, my salad and radish seedlings. We'll see if it works!

Gayle
Thanks for the comment. There's been more hedgehog activity recently if you look at the posts and I've included a picture today of the hedgehog taken only lat week.
As for encouraging - while your garden is 'rabbit-proof' then they won't get in. However, I guess in winter & spring before it gets warm you might not let the rabbits out much If you can keep them inside for a few weeks and create some holes in your fences/hedges to alllow hedgehogs to get in, that might help. You also need som farily dense indergrowth along the hedge/fence bottoms so they can move around without being seen and also be a good source of food like slugs and insects. We only knew we had a hedgehog when I found some droppings on our patio - they are quite unmistakable, black about the sixe of a medicine capsule and full of insect remains such as beetle wing cases.
Good lukc!

I love the photo of the hedgehog. Unfortunately they don't seem to find their way into our garden. I have only seen one locally in the 3 years we have lived here, crossing the road late one night.

Our garden is rabbit proof - we let ours run around like telletubbie land. Does anyone know of a way of letting/encouraging hedgehogs in but keeping the rabbits safe inside the garden at the same time?

Omar
You can eat young broad bean pods complete - just steam or boil them in water until tendere - they should only need a few minutes.
Once the pods show the beans inside as bulges then it is better to eat the beans, the pods will be too tough.

Phil,
Congrats on your 100th posting! We are now suffering from 30+ weather and strong sun. Tomorrow we'll start our beans and whatever else looks good at the nursery. JJ has started his tomatoes - twice daily waterings. Fruit trees look to be prolific this year, so too, probably the avifauna. Enjoyed some of your rain and wind last weekend while back in Scotland (for the funeral). Thanks again and enjoyed seeing your garden.

Hi
Yes it's been pretty awful - my seedlings blowing all over the place...
I admire your persistance in getting your greenhouse built despite. Still now you can sit inside with a radio, mug of coffee and - well potter -despite the weather. Still time to get seeds planted and to get some tomatos in....

Horrid weather for gardening when there's lots to be done. I've had the pleasure of building a greenhouse in the blustery showers. Not so fun, but my seedlings will be grateful when they move into their own pad.
